Florence Gay Backus (Browning)
Florence Gay Browning Backus, 90 of Midleburg passed away Monday April 18, at Logan Regional Medical Center. She was born May 16, 1925 in Dehue W.V.to Edward and Naurine Vaughn Browning. FLORENCE graduated from Logan High school in 1942 and attended Marshall University. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Colonel James Robert Backus, USA of Midleburg. Colonel Backus died in 1999 in Salinas California where the couple retired after his military career ended, in addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one sister Clara Browning Jenkins. Florence and Bob were married on March 28th, 1946 in Chevy Chase Maryland, upon Bob's return from WWII. As a result of Bob's military service Florence traveled to Japan, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands between Florence travels abroad she also lived in 13 states at various military bases. Florence was a avid golfer and played golf throughout California. She was a past president of the Northern California Womens Golf Association. At the time of her death she was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Florence is survived by her two sons Mike and Scott of Midleburg, also her Grandchildren Travis Kier and Trevor Kent, and four Great grandchildren Brayden, Sydney, Tanner, Taylor, sister Clara Browning Jenkins and nieces Carol Jeanne Backus West, Sharon Lynne Backus Hanson, Renee Tot Backus, Pamela Sue Wooddell and Amanda Gay Jenkins and nephew's Richard Steven Backus, Richard Grant Backus, Gary Brent Wooddell, Kirtley Don Wooddell and John Jenkins.
A Memorial Service will held on May 16, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Logan with Father George Kostas officiating.
